Oil Cap and Service light?

Yesterday I put in oil but forgot to put the cap back on. Drove around for a while and then the service engine light came on. I've done this before so I knew that I forgot to replace the cap. I put it back on, but the service light is still on. Will that go off on it's own or will I need to take it in to a service shop to have them do it?Oil Cap and Service light?
check your oil level ,make sure it is at the proper level. if the level is okay and the engine light is on take it somewhere that can pull codes to tell you what is wrong and fiw the problem.Oil Cap and Service light?
Dear Oil Cap-

More than likely what has happened is your computer has stored what is called a trouble code. This code indicates there could be or was a malfunction within the engines emission control system.

The newer the car, the more sensitive it will be to these changes.

Here is what probably happened.

Inside your engine there is a certain amount of vacuum that is developed to draw off gasses created from the combustion of the air/fuel mixture. There are also gasses created from the hot engine oil. These gasses are then drawn off and routed through the intake system and burned via the combustion cycle in your engine.

When the oil cap was missing, this vacuum was not present. You were allowing air from outside to enter the cylinder block, and not properly vent these gases to the intake system.

The emission system detected this and stored a trouble code on your car's computer.

You may have to go to the shop to have the trouble code cleared, so the service light will go out.

Now here is the other possibility.

I own 2 Scions, (Xb and Tc). They are equipped with a milage sensor that tells you when you are due for your oil changes. This sensor is tripped every 3000 to 5000 miles to remind you to get your oil changed. There is a very simple reset procedure that is printed in the manuals.

If this has happened, then its just by coincidence that the light stayed on after you replaced the cap. To be on the safe side, take your car to a shop and have it checked.

But make sure by reading your owners manual to see if your vehicle is equipped with such a device.

I wish you well.
Advanced Auto will check and turn off your Service Lights for free.

I would recomend taking it there
leaving cap off oil shouldent cause service lite to come on..
OMG!! Check your oil level. IF the cap isn't on, it will fly out of the motor as you rev it up. You are most likely dangerously low on oil!!!!
