Can the ';Service Engine'; light on a car can remain on because an oil change wasn't made at the dealership?

The service engine light usually doesn't mean anything at all. In most cars, it just counts a preset number of miles, that are supposed to be the interval between oil changes or service. The dealer then 'resets' the light. In most Japanese cars, this is done without special tools or computers, just by pushing the right combination of buttons on the dash, radio or door. In some Volvos and some American Cars, it requires a special computer tool which only the dealer may have. Look in your owner's manual to see if you can reset it yourself. Also... the interval is usually changeable too and can be reset to be various numbers of miles....may require a dealer to do so. My Volvo dealer used to charge upwards of $50 - $75 to reset the light. No, not from an oil change.... go get your computer scanned and they will tell you what they codes are and what needs to be fixed/replaced, any local auto store will scan your car for free and give you the codes.
Yes, check the oil level and color. If it is low or not brown, then you guessed the problem.
someone just did not reset the computer when they did the service. See your dealer of check you manual on resetting the engine service module
the service engine soon or check engine light CAN NOT be turned on because you didnt have anyone specific do the oil change. it means there is a concern somewhere in the emissions or driveability section of the cars operating systems. the oil change required light CAN be left on if the yahoo that did the oil change didnt reset it. should explain the process in your owners manual.

AMERICAN MADE CARS DO NOT HAVE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON AT SET MILEAGES. AND AS FAR AS I KNOW JAPANESE CARS DONT EITHER.


i HAVE heard that bmw and volvos do, or did at one time. since i wont buy an import i will never know for sure.
