Can I use my preferred brand of oil when taking my car in for service?

I was wondering if I could buy my own oil and ask the mechanic to put it into my car instead of the cheap stuff they use. Is that possible. I have talked to a few mechanics and none of them allow you to buy your own oil. Anyone know of a place that does? Can I use my preferred brand of oil when taking my car in for service?
Most Garages frown on that. They make a profit off of the oil when they do an oil change on your car

After all...

You don't bring your own bacon and eggs to your favorite restaurant when you go there for breakfast do you?

Ever bring your own steak to the steakhouse and ask them to cook it for you medium-well?

I didn't think so.

Most Garage owners view it the same way...Can I use my preferred brand of oil when taking my car in for service?
Its true, some of them don't like it, but its stupid of them. Most of them will just charge you more to make up for the lost profit on the parts, but otherwise I dont see why they would care. For example, if the place typically charges $30 for an oil change with the following break down:

$15 oil + filer (where $5 is the profit they are making from parts)

$15 labor.

Then if you bring your own oil, they might charge you $20 instead, this way everyone is happy.

Some customers enthusiasts have special requests for specific oil and filer, most of the shops don't carry these parts, but it is important to satisfy customer request.

And its OK for them to charge you extra to meet your specific needs. the goal is to make everyone feel happy.
i know a shop that does ,its located right next to the micky d that lets you bring in your own burgers to fry ......tell the shop what kind of oil u want and if they dont have it they will get it...we have been in business for 35 years and we do not allow carry in parts ..unless they are special parts that i do not have access to.....
That's why I do it myself, I get what I want.
nope
Don't see why not! When I worked in foreign car garage, - about 1/3 of our customers wanted us to use their oil instead of ours! Be cafreful,-- sometimes the ';expensive oil'; may not be as good for the car as the ';shop brand';! In the 70s we sold two BMW 2000 model cars almost identical all the way around except for the paint! This engine had overhead camshaft and two rocker shafts for rocker arms to work on, They were prone to wearing rocker arms down so much they would not open valves properly- even with adjustments set as ';tight as'; possible! Which then required removing heads, and changing out rocker shafts and rocker arms to get it back working right! Now our oil was ';local blend of oil'; which came in 55 gallon drums at a good price! --- And we used it because it was a a very good oil!! Now the one customer came in every 4000 miles and had always had his service done without fail! The second one pretty closely matched service schedule as well, -- the diference was that the one that always had ';his case of oil in trunk to use';, -- was having his 4th set or rocker shafts and arms put in -- Within a few days of one another (in fact one was finishing up when the other came in)!-The other one came in , and had the shafts and rocker arms replaced the first time, -- (and he used our ';cheap oil';!!) The ';pretty green and white'; cans did not make the parts last longer! They were both around 175-8 thousand miles on spedo.!

My theory being that ours let the ';junk'; solidify so that it could be taken out , the other one kept the stuff in solution probably because of very high detergent (or different kind ) content! They were both detergent oil too, and both engines looked real clean inside when taken apart! When in solution, it kept going around and around-- each time ';abrading'; rocker shafts and arms till they finally were too worn to use anymore!

And then again, you could change it yourself, -- all it requires is a good pan, funnel (to pour ito a can to take to disposal point), and wrench that fits oil filter to remove, - wrench that fits oil plug! Change oil when hot, ( it takes out more impuritites if it has been running amd mixed up all the stuff with oil!---- Watch it though keep face clear of pan, and use wrench to remove plug, -- let it drop in pan (oil is around 220-240 degrees when hot, -- and it will burn you)! you also need a roll of paper towels, or couple old rags to clean up with after you are done! You can retrieve drainplug from funnel when pouring oil into container to take to ';oil dump';! An old gallon anti-freeze jug or similar bottle works good, aslo you can use a couple plasrtic milk bottles --(don't let sit for long periods, milk bottles tend to crystalize in uv exposure and break and let oil run allover!) Or take to WalMart pick the oil you want ';off the shelf';, - and tehy'll put it in for you! Price about same as ';lube places';, - and you have control of oil (and additives if any) ............. As long as they are ';moving product'; they will ';live with'; whatever you choose';!!
