Oil Service light coming on and off?

ON my 330ci the oil serivce light came on 3 days ago while I was driving and then it went off the next day and hasnt come back since. What does that mean?Oil Service light coming on and off?
The E46 330ci doesn't have a countdown ';light bar'; like in the E36. instead, it has a ';miles to service'; display whenever you first turn your key. For example; you may see ';3000';. Or when you've completed an oil service, the BMW technician will reset your service indicator and you will see ';15,000';.

Your BMW service schedule that displays on your dash should be in the following order:

Oil service - Inspection 1 - Oil service - Inspection 2. Each interval between service is preset at approximately 15,000 miles.

I used the word ';approximately'; here because the BMW computer also does something interesting, it will CHANGE your service interval depending on the way you drive. If you like to rev your engine hard, go through frequent start=stop traffic, you may see the display going down quickly. But if you then ease up and drive in a more relaxed manner or do more highway drives, the display will do the opposite.

If your ';countdown'; shows you've driven the miles to be due for an oil service, the oil service light will come on.

It is possible that the computer determined you are ';just'; at the point where you need oil service (00000miles) because you've been driving the car hard but when you saw the light coming on, you eased up on your driving, and the computer gave you a few more miles back (say, 00050miles), this will untrigger the oil service light. But whichever the case, it's time for an oil service anyway.

Pay attention when you next get in your car to start it. When you insert your key and turn it to the first step (where the dash lights come on), look at the display and see what is shown in there.Oil Service light coming on and off?
Have you checked the oil levels? If they are fine then i'm not sure. Could have just been dust on the sensor
I agree with the comments made by the previous respondant, but I wanted to make sure it is not your ';Oil indicator'; lamp coming on the dash (low oil).

BMWs have a lovely oil level sensor which can act funny sometimes - especially just after an oil change.

Always start by having your oil level checked (when the engine has sat and cooled - about 10-15 min after stopping).

Also make sure you are getting the proper oil put in the vehicle (if you go to the dealer you are probably okay), just make sure the oil you use has the LL98 indicator on the back of the bottle.

Cheers!
